Is there a right time to write lyrics? Yes and no.

If you have the freedom to decide what time of day and which days you write, you have the most opportunity to maximize your writing productivity. If you’re a full-time musician then hopefully this describes you. Scientifically, you are more creative in the morning. You’re creative brain is awake while your editing brain is still sleeping, plus your willpower hasn’t been drained. That doesn’t mean you have to write in the morning, making a habit of writing is also important.

Determine your weekly tasks and when each of those tasks best fits into your schedule. Are you a morning person or a night owl? Would you rather start the week off by jumping into lyric writing, or getting the more mundane tasks done so you can spend the end of the week on lyrics? Maybe it’s best for you to start every day with lyrics and end with other tasks. This will take some experimentation but finding the right day(s) and time(s) is worth it.

Even if you don’t have that much freedom in your schedule you may still have more freedom than you think. Even with a full-time job, you can pick which day(s) work best for you. You can also try writing in the morning, during your lunch break, or in the evening. Switch it up and find out what works best for you.

Sometimes the best time to write is when you can. You may not have any freedom in your schedule right now. Maybe you can only write on Wednesday night from 7-7:15. If that’s you, then that is the best time for you to write.

Sometimes lyrics come at unexpected times. In this case, the right time to write is any time. Whether you have freedom in your writing schedule or not, this is you. Keep a pen and paper or access to your LyricWell account handy for those surprise ideas.
